The 15-Minute Walk-Around That Keeps Small Fall Problems From Becoming Winter Repairs

Every November, somebody calls a handyman about a stain on the ceiling or a pipe that split overnight. Almost every time, the cause was a small thing that was visible, and fixable, back in October.

Here's the good news, you don't need a big tool-belt kind of day to catch most of it. You need about 15 minutes and a slow lap around your house.

Fall is the best time to prepare your home before cold weather causes bigger problems.

Start outside, where water does its damage

  • Gutters and downspouts. Clogged gutters spill water down the siding and along the foundation. Look for sagging sections, overflow stains, and downspouts that dump right at the wall. Extensions that carry water 4-6 feet away are cheap and effective. Clear the leaves away from the foundation too. Dan blows them away from our own house every fall, because wet leaves piled against the walls hold moisture and invite rot, mold and pests.

  • Roof edges. From the ground, look for lifted, curled or missing shingles. You are not inspecting the roof, just spotting anything that stands out.

  • Outdoor spigots. Disconnect hoses before the first hard freeze. A hose left attached traps water in the line, and that is how a faucet splits inside the wall. Shut off the interior valve to the spigot if you have one.

  • Caulk and trim. Cracked caulk around windows, doors and siding is an open invitation for water. Press on any soft or spongy wood. Soft means moisture is already in.

Then walk the inside

  • Doors and windows. Hold your hand near the edges on a windy day. Feel a draft? Weatherstripping is a ten-dollar fix that shows up on your heating bill.

  • Furnace filter. Swap it now and set a phone reminder for the next one. A clogged filter makes the system work harder all winter.

  • Smoke and CO detectors. Press the test button and replace batteries. Check the date stamped on the back; most detectors need replacing around 10 years.

  • Under sinks and around the water heater. Look and feel for dampness. Slow leaks hide here for months.

  • Attic or top-floor ceilings. Any brown stains, or a musty smell, deserve a closer look before snow arrives.

Keep the list handy

We put all 15 checks on a one-page printable so you can tape it inside a cabinet door and tick it off each fall. If you'd like a copy, it's right here.

And if you find something

Some of these are five-minute jobs you can do yourself. Others, like a gutter you can't reach safely or a soft spot you don't want to guess about, are worth a second set of hands. That's what we do. A quick message at getfastsolutions.com/contactus is all it takes, and we'll tell you honestly whether it's a DIY or a call.
